West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) conduct the WBCS exam. The exam has three tiers of examination – preliminary, mains, and interview. WBCS Prelims covers only general studies. The mains exam has six papers, out of which it has one optional subject for two papers, the optional papers opt for only group A and group B services. For the remaining six papers, there are four multiple-choice papers. 

The six papers comprise – general studies I, general studies II, the constitution of India / Indian economy/functions of RBI and 4th paper covers arithmetic and test of reasoning.

Mains can be taken in Bengali or English language, and this exam has a deduction of 10% of the total marks secured by the candidate if they disclose their identity on the answer sheet. Each paper is 200 marks. 

The preliminary syllabus has eight topics which are –

• General Science ( general appreciation, understanding of science, matters of everyday observation, and experience as expected from an educated person)
• Current events of national and international importance (significant events)

• Indian geography related to West Bengal (Physical Geography, Social Geography & Economic Geography) 
• Indian politics (Indian Constitution, Panchayati Raj, Constitutional Bodies, etc.)
• Indian National Movement (Nature and character, growth of nationalism and Attainment of independence),
