Civil services examination, also known as IAS, is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission UPSC every year. To qualify for the exam, a candidate has to clear three stages. As per the ranking, they become the officers in the Indian Administrative Service(IAS) or Indian police service(IPS) or Indian Foreign Service(IFS) or a host of another service. The age limit for attempting the IAS exam is 21-32 (age relaxation for SC / ST / reserved candidates). 

The prelims and mains (held for five days) were delayed this year and conducted on 27 June,  21, and 17 September, 21, respectively. 

The Prelims exam has two papers for 2 hours each, the first paper is general studies and has 100 questions of 200 marks, and the second paper will have 80 questions for 200 characters. The questions are either objective type or multiple choice; there is negative marking for the prelims stage; for every incorrect answer, one-third of the allotted marks will be deducted. The first paper at prelims is of merit ranking nature, and the second paper is of qualifying nature. Blind candidates are allotted 20 more minutes, and for every candidate, it is mandatory to attend both papers for evaluation.

The second stage, which is UPSC mains, comprises nine papers with a total of 1750 marks –

NOTE – paper A and B are of qualifying nature, and the remaining seven papers are of a merit ranking nature.

After qualifying both prelims and mains, the last round is an interview or personality test for 275 marks; the questions are purely based on hobbies, current affairs, general knowledge, situation questions, and many more. This round is conducted to evaluate an individual’s ability to handle the upcoming pressure of making decisions for the country’s betterment. The interview round is held only in UPSC Bhavan in New Delhi
